Not going to wade into overhype, though I find the scam thing to be incredibly troubling. Preys on working and middle class kids who want to escape their hometowns, but would be much better served attending their state school or parlaying what are good grades into merit scholarships at less "prestigious" institutions. There for the grace of god could have been me. I picked a LAC that offered me money. Also had loans. Not overly onerous, but did make a dent in ability to save. For grad school, passed on Columbia b/c of COL (even though I was living in NYC at the time, just knew living there as a student would end up being too costly) and attended a comparable school in a slightly less expensive city (able to share an apartment and live close enough to school so transport costs were minimal).
