The half dozen IB Brent families who went on to to Jefferson this year can be thrilled with their choice without that changing the fact that more than 85% of the 4th grade families rejected the program, like they've done for years.
There are definitely more than half a dozen Brent families with kids in this year's sixth grade class at Jefferson. I know this, because my family is one of them. (And for what's it's worth, Jefferson also has kids from Van Ness this year, as Van Ness gradated its first fifth-grade class last year.) I understand your larger point, but please try to make it without hyperbole.
Brent families, yes, in-boundary families, no.
And herein lies the rub… Vanishingly few Brent IB families go to Jefferson. The same is true for Maury/EH. At least 10 LT IB families go to SH each year.
How did you conclude only 10 children from LT go to SH? I live near SH and see many children in red polos coming out of their homes when I’m out and about that time of the morning. My kids are really young so I have no idea.
Not only at all. About 90% of the LT 5th grade class goes to SH. But the percentage of kids that are IB is at its lowest in 5th grade and previously there were only 2 5th grade classes, so maybe 40 kids. I am confident at least 10 of the 15-20 IB kids goes to SH; I’m sure it’s often more, but I didn’t want to inflate the stats. Now that LT has 3 5th grade classes (this year has been the expansion class all the way through and added a 3rd class to each of 2nd-5th as it hit them), I think it will be safe to say at least 15. That said, one interesting fact of gentrification is that as more IB 2/3/4th graders stay, a higher percentage of 5th graders leave, because UMC white/Asians seem to be the most likely to opt into Basis/Latin/private.
