Because of the prevalance of American media.  They found that in this small pacific island, before western media invaded that island, the people were "fat" and happy.  They got exposed to western media, and low and behold, people started getting eating disorders.

BTW, in Asia, light skin has *always* been a sign of beauty because it was associated with wealth, ie, if you were rich you didn't have to work the farms; same in Europe until about the 20th century when tanning meant that you could afford beach vacations.  And the eye surgery in Asia?  Half the east Asian population has the double eyelid naturally. Has nothing to do with looking more white. You're totally right, thats why Asians also die their hair brown and blond. They get surgery to make noses more pointed, moving foreheads forward, reducing cheekbones and pulling prominent mouths back of course makes them look MORE asian not less.

You don't have to "buy" it.  I got news for you... there are plenty of Asians with high forwards and pointy noses.  I also have seen plenty of white women getting lip fillers and butt injections to get a bigger butt, and getting tans.  Does this make them want to be more black?[/quote]

Most people in East Asia are not wearing traditional dress on a daily basis.  They wear westernized clothes ?? mostly in daily life.  In Japan ?? are mainly worn on special occasions.

Much of what you see in modern Japanese fashion is western derived. Same for HK, Korea and mainland china, though you do see the elderly in China wearing more traditional dress in terms of overcoats, and for women ?? on special occasions.

I lived/worked in Japan for several years and speak Chinese as well (married to a chinese).  Western/european derived culture, be it beauty standards, art, fashion, music etc has overwhelmed traditional culture all over the world.
