My thoughts are that if your kid is younger than U14 and playing on a team where players are already slotted into positions, you should change clubs. Re extra touches, again, if your kid is on a team where possession is not being taught, you should change clubs.
YES. My now U10 keeps getting slotted to the back because NOBODY on his team can do a decent job defending. My kid plays forward very well, in fact, better than the kids they put up there---but Coaches feel worse having those kids in the back since goals are let in. WELL---how the hell do they think any of these kids are going to learn to play defense if they never teach them?!!! And now my kid is getting zero chance to stay a well-rounded player. Btw, we no longer score because now we have a not-so-great offense filled with the kids that can't play defense at all and the good forwards in the back. AND YES--I UNDERSTAND ALL OF THIS POSITIONING IS IRRELEVANT AT 8/9/10/11, etc. We need our kids to learn to play anywhere on the field in the developmental years. So--damn coaches---listen the hell up!!
And this is a Club that prides itself on focusing on 'development' vs winning.
PP here. You should change clubs. They're not all like that.
I posted the original question and the kids do move around to all the positions, but generally play 1-2. My son plays defense and midfield so I have no complaints. When it gets out of control, the coach experiments a bit more and I'm ok with that as well. But I'm on the fence about telling a team to back off or keep playing the game you were taught, build from the back and maintain possession, keep the field wide, and strike when the opportunity is there. Again, I'm not complaining about the club or coach so don't treat this as a gripe session. I feel bad for the team getting killed, but don't think telling the winning team to not play the way they were taught is fair either. Also to comment on development vs winning.....Devlopment is a buzz word and everyone wants to win, end of story. I think the thing that separates good coaches and bad ones are that some teach players: Play to win vs Win at all cost. I have no issues with playing to win, but be stay with your team strategy vs some clubs that teach "strategy", but toss it out when it's tournament time at which point converts to run and gun.
