Rumor is that the 08, 07 and 06 boy's Red teams were decimated by departures. *The info was 2nd hand
2010 lost at least one good one too. Boy played a year behind our son and is now playing ECNL a year early for another club it seems.
There will come a point in a player’s development where he might want to play ECNL or MLS Next. Vienna just doesn’t offer that so there will always be some players that move on.
You Vienna parents like to tell yourself that anyone who leaves goes to ECNL or MLS Next teams, but it's just not true. Stop lying to yourselves. Of course there are a few, but geez.
So where are they going?
This discussion seems to be getting down to specific teams and specific players. That is not somewhere IMO these discussions should ever go.
True. Could we say it more generally? Leagues? Level of clubs?
I actually expect better from you implying that certain leagues are better than others and that there are different level of clubs. So if I said that two kids left for an NCSL team. What does that say? Are you saying Vienna's Red team is better that NCSL teams? What if I said that two kids left for McLean. What does that tell you?
On the contrary, though I suppose "level of clubs" is open to interpretation. Maybe "type of club" would be better. So on the question of leagues -- I'm not trying to cast a value judgment of my own, but I guess I'm wondering what parents think. Do *they* think CCL is better, and is that where they're going? I could argue that NCSL D1 is every bit as good as ECNL RL, but in any case, I'd doubt any parents would think of that as a step up. CCL might be seen as a step up, as might EDP. Some teams are also in the USYS South Atlantic Conference. NCSL isn't likely to be seen as a step up, especially because there aren't many "A" teams in the league. If they're leaving for NCSL, they clearly have an issue with Vienna, which could mean that the NCSL team is truly better or they just think the grass is greener. Let's try this -- we'll group clubs/teams by how parents would think of them or what they offer. GROUP A: Other ECNL RL clubs, with the players leaving for teams that aren't likely to be in the USYS South Atlantic Conference. GROUP B: Teams that played in the USYS South Atlantic Conference or are likely to make it next year (several Doradus, one Burke but older, one ViVa but older, some GFR, some McLean). This might be a legitimate step up, like ECNL or MLS Next. (ECNL's comparative merits may be subject to debate, but if you think your kid is going to get college exposure and can make the most of it, it might have an advantage.) GROUP C: EDP or CCL, lured by the brand name (next year's CCL lineup: Alexandria, Barca, BRYC, DC Stoddert, Herndon, LMVSC, McLean, NVSC, SYA, SYC -- some obviously B teams). You and I might not think this is a concrete step up, but some parents might. So ... which group is getting the Vienna departees?
To be clear, I only know of departures to none of the above - top teams at ECNL or MLS Next clubs.
