I’m pp, also Walmart was the biggest reason we shopped businesses overseas, not the government. Walmart’s price model is low margin, high volume. They pressured companies to lower prices to be on their shelves and the only way to do that was to ship jobs to China. It seems easy to blame government instead of greedy capitalists. There’s lots of information on this should you choose to google it. I’ve posted lots of info here on DCUM.
Thanks for giving your heartfelt opinion, but there are many facts you got wrong. And while I understand your point above, it doesn’t go deep enough. For example, WHY do you think Walmart pushes vendors to lower their prices? It is because 1) they know lower prices are available in the market, and 2) customers WANT to pay the cheapest price and don’t mind it coming from China if it does. #2 is VERY important. Capitalism is exceptionally efficient and it rewards companies who offer consumers what they are willing to pay for. Given Walmart’s stature as the nation’s largest retailer by far, they have clearly unlocked the code that American’s simply want low prices. That is impossible to produce in the US at our wage rates and frankly skill level on many products. By tariffing imports, the government is effectively raising prices and adding a tax. This is a fact. You should google it from a reliable source or better yet use ChatGPT. Additionally, adding tariffs won’t stimulate a notable increase in domestic production as it is still cheaper (and often better) to produce most goods overseas. This Trump policy on tariffs is only raising prices while simultaneously doing little to stimulate domestic production. And ironically, the ones who get hurt the most are those who consume more than they produce & earn (low to mid income families). Those who benefit the most are company owners and those who produce more than they spend (the wealthy). As usual, DJT is only helping himself and those like him at your expense. He is a con.
I’m pp and I didn’t get facts wrong, otherwise I agree with what you wrote. Walmart cannibalized small towns. People were forced to shop low prices because they lost their jobs, then put other towns out of business by shopping there. They also put small shops out of business. Yes, a lot of it rests on the consumer. The Dems have also failed to get creative. They should tax Walmart for all its employees who use government assistance since they underemploy so many to keep from paying benefits. They could tax non-recycled items, or find other creative measures. I know what tariffs do, I don’t need to Google it. I don’t use ChatGPT because it’s consuming valuable resources and raising electricity prices. How do you solve consumer habits?
P.S. you also got a fact wrong. You said that Walmart lowered prices because they were competing with other businesses. That is unequivocally false. It is for the reason I stated in my first post. They set the prices. It was never about competition because stores didn’t have that business model.
DP...they lowered prices forcing other companies out of business, the same way Amazon did with books when it first started.
