Spalding is just average this year. They likely wont make the MIAA playoffs. New coach this year too. Bullis playing them to a one goal game is not a good omen for the Bulldogs. IAC and WCAC are way down this year and early season results thus far already show this. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Cadets lay an egg tomorrow against Gilman!
Bullis reffing is insane. FoGo for Bullis goes early every single time and home refs saying nothing? Smelled a lot like last year's Landon and Gonzaga matches. Bullis at Spalding or a neutral field loses that match. But look for Bullis to only have problems with Prep and Landon as the rest of their schedule is meh at best.
All these things can be true - it’s a tough school to recruit to and he is a bad coach. He had a solid team last year and did nothing with it. Everyone also has a Heeter yelling at them when they were like 9 years old story from NL as well. He is a hot head with little imagination and no ability to coach kids up. Can you imagine going there and your “break” from the academic pressure is getting screamed at by that guy in practice? I am glad he is there as it keeps them from ever really mounting a challenge.
STA had a good squad last year, however at the same time, the IAC happened to be pretty deep last spring. GP was a top 5 team in the Nation. Landon ended up having a decent team by the end of the year as did Episcopal who historically is one of the worst teams in the league and Bullis is always good. STA went 3 - 4 last year against MIAA play (beat Spalding, Gilman and St Pauls... lost to Severn)... Went undefeated during their road trip to Texas against some solid programs down there. Beat league foe Bullis for the first time in maybe a decade and played Gonzaga rather close. Not going to deny, they did have some bad losses, the Saint Stephens game was bad. In the head Heeter's defense, STA is a hard place to recruit prospective families to. Academically it is the hardest All Boys school in the area to get into and STA generally doesn't bend on admissions standards for athletes unlike some other IAC teams (not trying to open up a can of worms here). As an STA fan, I'd like to see the admin put more of an emphasis on its lacrosse program. Right now, the soccer program gets all the spotlight and appears to have more political capital with admissions.
They did NOT go undefeated in Texas. Heeter overplayed some kids last year and had no depth resulting in many late game collapses. In his defense, perhaps his best overall player and key chemistry guy didn’t really play last year. Unfortunately, he looks to be doing the same overplay strategy again this year. STA has had multi-goal leads in every game they have played but have faded late. Soccer, CC, tennis, baseball and golf field STAs best teams. Unfortunately, those are also some of the hardest sports to translate into enhanced college admissions.
These teams are also consistently competitive against conference rivals and vie for championships frequently. The coaches at STA for these teams seem to have figured out how to field great teams with limited recruiting availability. While it’s certainly an issue for Heeter, it’s no more of an issue for him than it is the baseball, soccer, cross country track etc. coach and they all manage well.
