I'm going with madman. A conman wouldn't risk himself if he truly understood the thing to be a deathtrap. That's the craziest part to me. He knew it wasn't safe and got in the thing himself. [/quote]

He was probably wealthy, privileged, educated, and a genius. Look at his education. He was used to being the smartest guy in the room and also very used to taking crazy risks. He put too much faith in himself, I think. [/quote]
