This was a four hankie podcast; I'm a father and I teared up several times. Mainly because my school district could have easily been just like Normandy....small and segregated from all of the surrounding richer (and whiter) school districts. Our saving grace was that we had a large cohort of excellent, veteran teachers (a lot of them went to "teacher's college" to stay out of Vietnam). I I can't remember having a teacher who had less than 15 years of classroom experience, ever. Our HS and MS would have been considered integrated by the standards of this podcast, but the elementary schools were strictly segregated by neighborhood and/or race. We had two black schools, two white schools, a puerto rican school and an Italian school (not considered white, really). Somehow, even the white kids that lived on the black side of town managed to find a way to get into the white schools across town. I was not aware of any large discrepancies in educational opportunities between the schools. The city created a TAG magnet elementary and the black parents fought like hell to make sure their kids got to participate. I believe the program was very successful. This was in the 80s. It's hard to believe we are still fighting that same battle in 2015.
