Why would the burka ban being debated on the grounds of security be "silly"? Burkas have been used to hide gender and weapons in multiple instances.

The question of "values" is definitely tricky. France's values are, among others, include (a) freedom of speech/expression, (b) secularism, and (c) equality for all, including women. Obviously there's a conflict among these values....  Does France have the right to say, "you have freedom of speech, but within our framework of secularism"? Is (b) secularism necessary to help ensure (a) freedom of speech and (c) equality for all? I can't answer these questions, myself.[/quote]
