I had a friend move from Silver spring to olney...kept telling me that there want "that element" at Sherwood. I wouldn't necessarily compare the DCC schools to Whitman or Churchill, but they are certainly comparable to Blake, Sherwood, and magruder. And probably better than Damascus and Seneca valley.
As one who teaches in the NEC, the DCC is comparable to the NEC and to Magruder - but NOT to Sherwood. See for yourself. High FARMs affects instruction, and that isn't to say that kids who come from poverty CAN'T learn. They can. But it oftentimes takes longer b/c attendance becomes an issue (either from being disengaged or having to work or being responsible for the care of younger siblings). If attendance has been an issue, then basic skills are missing. And if these students are placed in on level courses - without being given remedial classes - they fall through the cracks, and no teacher - no matter how dedicated and gifted with instructional methods - can catch up that many kids. So as a parent AND educator, my own children are in an environment where teachers can teach. I will work hard to do the best I can for our struggling population, but I will not let my children suffer. And FWIW, you buy for the high school - not for the elementary. I have friends right now kicking themselves for making the wrong move. Sherwood - 15% FARMs Magruder - 33% Blake - 34% Blair - 36% Einstein - 41% Kennedy - 54% Northwood - 47% Paint Branch - 34% Springbrook - 44% Wheaton - 58% Damascus - 16% Seneca V - 35%
It's probably a good thing you teach in a more affluent school. All students deserve teachers who believe they can succeed, and who understand that being born to a lower income family is not equivalent to having a lower IQ or to being less able to learn.
+1. I shared with my neighbor and friend who teaches at our nearby DCC school and we both thanked our lucky stars you are nowhere near us. And fwiw she tells me your sentiment is not shared by the vast majority of MoCo high school teachers. Perhaps you should consider counseling.
