Live in Silver Spring or Kensington Heights. You can be near the metro and have lovely ES options, ok MS options and then down county consortium for HS. I have many neighbors with college age children at prestigious NE liberal arts schools, some Ivies, and many at other desirable schools like duke, Stanford, UVA. There are also a ton at college park, which isn't a terrible school either! Bethesda, Chevy Chase and NW DC are not the only acceptable places to live. If you can't make it on 200k, it means you are trying to live above your means. My neighbors in Kensington heights are really diverse. Some families making well under 200k, some making well over, but prefer the lower cost of living here v. Town of Kensington or Bethesda.
People also live at around half that all over Capitol Hill, SoFlo, NOMA and other now-fashionable EOTP neighborhoods. Here's how: use only one car; take metro or walk to work; send kids to DCPS or charters; take insurance and retirement through work; coop babysitting and preschool; vacation by car; community garden rather than CSA; Costco rather than Whole Foods; date cheaply at Smithsonian or NPS locations; East Potomac Park and other DPR sites rather than club memberships; etc. There are ways to live in DC very, very cheaply, if you want to do it; you'll meet fabulous, innovative people in the process.
