You are exactly right. No one else gets in without the unanimous consent of the member schools. Sela and any new immersion schools will have to prove themselves in order to be considered, along with capacity, attrition, etc. No one gets in after 9th grade.
To an outside observer, Sela looks like a good fit. Apparently they've worked with Yu Ying similarly to the way Mundo Verde did before their opening, even down to charter application assistance. Sela is hosting a discussion of immersion education for the public, and representatives from all the feeder schools will also be participating. There appears to be a working relationship. Who knows, since Sela has room in their big new facility, maybe they can offer the DCI some swing space? That would certainly make them an attractive partner with something to bring to the table.
It's true that Sela has worked closely with YY on design and starting their new school. But as a parent at a current feeder school I definitely hope the criteria that is weighed is much more complex than design of the school. What language is feeding should be a major onside ration, and while I have no objection to Hebrew at DCI, it would not at all be a priority language for inclusion in my book. I'd want to see more French, an Arabic school, even Amharic way before Hebrew. It's about the languages usage outside of school settings in both the DC population and in world populations and business. Re: the feeder schools keeping separate space at DCI, what is the source for that info?? Everything I've heard has DCI as one middle school and one high school. Not separate programs or separate space. What is the source that says there will be separation?
Oh please. What's up with all this "mean girl" mentality against Sela? My kid is not at feeder or Sela (we live next door to WR and certainly considering DCI), but this attitude is crazy. Who cares if you don't prefer Hebrew? Obviously there are plenty that do considering the following they already have. Your kid doesn't have to take Hebrew. IMHO, Hebrew is just as useful as French in this immediate area (if not more if you consider it's immediate neighborhood of Shep Park). Yes, id like to see Arabic and Amharic too. What's wrong with making it a truly International school? What's up with this "make Sela prove itself" talk? MV certainly did not prove itself when it joined its opening year. We haven't seen MV'a CAS scores, attrition, etc.
It's pretty wacky (although as YY family, we are pretty used to nutty mean girl behavior on DCUM). DC Bilingual is a small, tier 2 school - have they proven themselves? MV has been around for like 2 minutes - have they proven themselves? We should all be encouraging DCI to draw from a very broad student population - because as good as we hope it will be, we all know people will still peel away for privates and MoCo - people IB for Wilson or at Latin, DCI will be no different.
You can call it mean girl all you want, but honestly it doesn't help Sela's case that so many who speak up for the school perceive every.single.opinion that is expressed as not prioritizing Hebrew as "mean" or "hating" (as I have seen in countless threads discussing Sela). There have definitely been many disrespectful things said (on both sides of the discussion actually), but you are essentially saying that anyone who voices the opinion I said above is "mean"? Seriously? My post is bolder above. Please, previous two posters, tell me what is mean in the slightest about my post?
