300k gross for a family of 3 in dmv is close to poverty. You need to make double that in combined income to make ends meet
80 percent of the DC area is in poverty?
It’s poor even relative to how I grew up back in Europe in 1980s. We had international vacation once a year, visited theaters and museums on weekends, a nice 2br/2baths apartment, after school sports and arts, excellent schools which gave me real transferable skills for life. If you want to replicate this lifestyle in the US high COLA areas you need around 500k gross income min in my opinion
So not having this kind of lifestyle is poverty?
I wouldn’t even live in the US if I couldn’t provide for my child what my parents gave me growing up and in college. Why would I ?
That may be your personal choice, but there are objective definitions of poverty, middle class, etc. and your interpretation of it is delusional. A third of Americans don't own their home. Only 15 percent max out their 401k, and about the same low percentage take an international trip. What you are claiming to be necessities are complete luxuries to the vast majority of Americans, even those in the DC area.
I mean an "international" trip to a European means driving 2 hours. It's basically an interstate trip for an American. There are many countries that are very inexpensive for Americans to get to. Mexico and Canada in particular. I've even driven to Canada from DC. Bermuda, Bahamas and most of the Caribbean are also cheap. Most Americans don't need international trips to go on vacation though. Our National Parks are incredible. I've been to all 7 continents and I'd put the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone at the top of the natural beauty locations in the world.
How is any of what you said (whether true or not) relevant to the broader point of what objectively constitutes poverty, middle class, etc.?
