Money definitely can cause division and in marriages it can contribute to divorce. I had a friend ask me to be in her wedding and I asked the expectations. She claimed I could pick out my own bridesmaid dress in a certain color and just travel to attend wedding in her hometown. I think she said one local shower. Well over time the expectations turned to hideous and crazy expensive dress which not only involved purchase but alterations, multiple showers we fund and only one local, destination bachelorette we fund, and weekly emails that include assignments. I brought up my limited budget and expressed concern that expectations for spending changed. She was a bit uppity. So, I backed out 8 months before the wedding-before buying the dress. I still helped fund a shower, got shower gifts and wedding gift, but did not attend wedding or bachelorette. I am the only one of the original chosen bridesmaids who still talks to her. She is also headed for divorce in part because of arguments over money.
