I’m fiscally conservative and don’t like the crazy spending by FCPS. But I agree with buying KA, and in my opinion, this is pretty much the only thing the board got right. They have been saying the enrollment would go down but high schools in Western Fairfax kept growing to unhealthy level. Overall, I think it’s better to have six schools with 2,000 kids each than five schools with 2,400 kids each.
They built or expanded multiple schools in Western Fairfax to accommodate more than 2,400 kids each. The schools with smaller capacities are further east. And several of the schools in Western Fairfax (most notably, Centreville and Herndon) have seen declining enrollments in recent years. So your post just shows how people are ready to toss their principles aside and praise wasteful spending as long as they stand to benefit personally.
There are neighborhoods right next to Centreville that are shipped to Fairfax because there is no room at Centreville. Chantilly and Westfield both have INCREASING ENROLLMENTS.
Chantilly enrollment is down about 80 kids over the past two years and projected to continue to decline by another 140 kids over the next five years. Westfield enrollment is up, but the school remains under capacity. Centreville enrollment is down over 400 kids in recent years. With a modest expansion - not a gargantuan expansion to 3000 - it could provide some capacity relief to Westfield or take some kids from Fairfax if needed. And Westfield could take kids from Chantilly and, in turn, send kids to Herndon, which now has over 600 extra seats. It's sad how some of you just lie when it comes to the facts regarding enrollments at some of these schools.
Oh, please. The boundary study just added kids to Chantilly. And, while enrollment may be down some this year it is still above 2900. That is well over capacity. And, yes, they have an old modular and it is still well over capacity. Westfield is over 2800 and growing. Oakton is growing, too.
Enrollments are declining at as many schools in that area are as increasing. Could have sent the Westfield kids to Herndon, Chantilly kids to Westfield, and Oakton kids to Madison - any problems would have been solved. Plus Centreville is on the verge of a big expansion even though enrollment there is 400 kids down. But School Board saw a shiny toy and had to have it. And you folks think that type of impulse buying is a good substitute for actual planning and sound management of resources.
You want to move everyone else's kids around so that your school can get renovated instead and your kids won't be moved. Got it.
You want to move everyone else’s kids around so that you get a new school and your kids won’t have to attend a school you don’t like. Got it.
I don't think you understand at all. The new school has been needed--for years. The property was slated years ago but given away for what appear to be political reasons. This is a chance to make it right.
That’s the simplistic way they approached this, but it ignores the many millions spent to expand other schools during the period in which FCPS had concluded a new school wouldn’t be feasible in this part of the county. And they don’t even have the brains to scale back the Centreville expansion now that they are adding 2000+ seats at Skyview. It’s a gross misallocation of capital resources.
The expansion at Centreville is a different topic. This topic is discussing Skyview, the new HS. Maybe find the Centreville topic and bump that up to complain about it. The new HS has been needed for ages. I am sorry that you don't like that it was purchased but it was needed. Can we have one topic where people can actually discuss the new school and how it is progressing without the whinging about its existence? There is a topic on the Western Boarders that people are complaining in. There is the overall boundary review topic that you can complain in. Why can't the people who have kids getting ready to attend Skyview have a place to actually discuss Skyview? Sick of the negativity.
The Carson folks likely to attend Skyview have been transparent in how indifferent they are if Centreville neighborhoods get moved to backfill Westfield, assuming Coates, Floris, and McNair all move to Skyview. But then they put out the CIP indicating they still plan to expand Centreville to 3000, which suggests maybe they don’t plan to move CVHS kids to Westfield after all, but just leave Westfield with a far smaller enrollment. Anyone who claims these issues aren’t connected is quite self-centered. Shouldn’t they have a vision for what they intend to do at the various schools, not just act on impulse and then not appear to have any plan other than waiting to see who yells the loudest about who moves from stays at their current schools?
The Carson parents don't write the CIP and have no real say on the Centreville expansion. I don't think it is needed. I think they should renovate and not expand. I don't think Herndon needed it's expansion. My saying I think it is ridiculous does not mean a darn thing to the board. The families at Centreville and Chantilly have been complaining about being over crowded, the issue is that none of the ES that feed into those HS wants to be the one moved. Not a surprise, we saw this in the boundary review. People want things fixed but they don't want to be the one moved. So yes, kids from Centreville will move to Westfield and kids from Chantilly will move to Skyview. I don't think any of those ES are happy with that.
