When someone is of sound mind, you cannot force a caregiver into their home. Check out the Elder forum for countless examples of this. People have the right to live as they choose, and assume the risks. Even adult protective services cannot force someone who has decision-masking capacity to accept help in the home. Family members may wring their hands, but there’s nothing they can do. We have no idea of the particulars in Savannah Guthrie’s mom’s case. Please don’t turn this into a tiresome debate about whether she has enough help in her home, or should’ve been in assisted living.
+1. By all accounts, she lived in a beautiful home in Tucson (the absolute dream for many older people). She was obviously getting to church regularly and had friends. There is no earthly reason why anyone should think she should have been in assisted living. People have medical issues and all ages and most of them live at home.
This. Svannah did a televised visit back to show her hometown and it looked lovely. The mom spoke about her peaceful life gardening and watching nature in action, etc. She had many friends and was attending weekly church. She had adult children in the areas. The chances of this were a fraction of a percent. She was the best example of aging in place.
