Poor as in can’t live in a quality school district and can’t afford even a $30k private. BTW, if they are really that strapped the Sidwell’s of the world will provide FA. Why choose a low paying job if it means you now have to homeschool your kid (which is no job I think)?
So many of your assumptions are flawed. We homeschool even though we live in FCPS in a well-regarded pyramid. My kids were in AAP through 6th grade. True, we can't afford a $30K private for two kids, but we do live in a "good" school district (although it did not work for my kids, for various reasons including overcrowding and several years of truly crappy teachers). And I chose a job in public service because I actually believe in public service. You should be glad that some people are willing to join the military or be agents and prosecutors. Our work allows you to do... whatever you do. You do understand that, once kids are in high school, they aren't necessarily taught by their parents? Many take classes at co-ops or hybrid schools or through online classes. Some work independently. The key is flexibility and control over what classes are taken when, not that you are sitting one-on-one with a parent at your dining room table. Do you actually know anyone who has homeschooled? Or are you just going on stereotypes?
So…just to confirm…you can’t afford private school. Not sure why you don’t apply for FA…but you do you. Seems like you 100% confirmed the stereotype.
DP. We can afford any private school in the country. We just don’t happen to live close to any outstanding ones. Most people don’t have a Philips Sidwell or Brearley equivalent within driving distance. I homeschooled two kids through elementary, did a hybrid program in middle school, and then they went to a public magnet high school. They were both able to start 9th grade in calc and AP English. I think they will be ok.
