Exactly what I was thinking!  My 20-something daughter and I love to go to NYC together - among other places.  And *gasp* she still does lots of trips with her friends, too!  It's not either/or.  I was the same way with my own mom, very close but also had my own friends.[/quote]

I'm that poster. And you have to understand I wasn't allowed to go anywhere with friends. I wasn't allowed to have friends. I'd make friends at school or activities but then never be allowed to have them over or go to their houses or do things with them. And it was one ballet when I was very young and one broadway show when I was about 17. Not many Broadway shows. I had to pay for taxis because she was convinced the subway was unsafe. We had to do everything her way. It wasn't even worth it. My mother ONLY wanted me to have her as a friend. Not anyone else. So she flexed her authority to make that happen. [/quote]
