Spent a week this Summer at a teens’ coed summer camp and noticed this happening. The African-American kids in particular seemed to really self-segregate and only sit with AA kids during mealtimes. Our troop is about 40% white, equal amount Asian/Indian, with a few Latinx and AA kids. But at summer camp 2025, they all just seemed to separate this way. Why are kids still doing this in 2025? Any suggestions to stop it?
The same reasons adults do.
Sure, but that doesn’t make it ok; don’t you agree ?
DP but it doesn't make it wrong either. Forcing them to mix is wrong.
It’s a red flag for sure. Not associating with any other race than your own is not healthy or admirable in any way no matter what your excuse is. It’s wrong to discriminate based on skin color.
Doesn’t it depend on who is doing the self-segregating? My sense is that it’s not okay for white kids to self-segregate and exclude but it is okay for Black kids to do so.
Wow, just wow.
PP here. Is this wrong? This is my lived experience and I don’t even know what part of what I wrote is worthy of “wow”! For instance, my kids’ (public) elementary school has an affinity group for Black students and a social worker who works exclusively with Black families in “Black needs”. They group the Black students together in classes and if there is a Black teacher, they give her all the Black students. I don’t think anyone - Black or white - has an issue with this, but you certainly wouldn’t do this for white students. Then I see it in real life too. For example, it’s a joke about how white people aren’t invited to the cook out. No one is “challenging” or shaming them for not inviting Bob from the office. But if a white “progressive” person hosts a party, people and books like “White Fragility” ask the white people to think about why they don’t have any Black friends and suggests that means they’re racist. Is this not everyone else’s experience too???
I'm white, originally from EE with no black people at all growing up. I have had people who I don't even know asking me to work for them (in US, not in EE/EU) when I didn't ask for work or need a job. Right now I'm asking a friend to hire a friend of a friend and give him a chance to enter our industry. He asked me if he was AA and he is. It took me a lot of convincing and I'm still waiting to hear if he is going to do it. They are even from the same country. If I'm not invited somewhere by black people, its because they don't like me as a person or it's because it's their party or anything but race. It is not my race that does me in. When I go to Europe, I'm simply another white person. The minute I step off the plane is US, I'm reminded how good it is to be white. No, don't group white students together and give them a white teacher. This has been going on for so long for the benefit of the whites that I feel it every single day and benefit from it. I wasn't even born here. I show up and I'm like the best thing ever without even doing anything. I did go on to work extremely hard to show that I am quite good, but it wasn't hard if I have back wind. I recognized it with the help of a black friend long ago. I'm thankful for him for pointing out that the apartment I wanted to rent, I got because I was white. Being white was my good credit. The apartment told me I had good credit. I was illegal. What credit?! I hadn't started building it yet. When black people talk about being treated unfairly, white people need to talk about how well and then some they are being treated, but they don't. They take it as the norm.
Now go try and get a job as a white man at WMATA and see how that works for you. White skin is a liability in DC.
