We paid several thousand for our purebred dog and it was worth every penny. The breeder only breeds 1-2 litters per year, sometimes zero (like this year). The moms are their family pets and they have a couple others they have kept from litters over the years. Maybe 5 dogs total. Their home was spotless clean and a really nice setting. Large fenced backyard overlooking a lake. The breeder has been showing dogs for years and knows all the other good breeders. That’s where the sires come from. She doesn’t keep any intact males at her home. The breeding is a whole planned thing. We had to drive down and meet her and the dogs before she was willing to let us buy one. We had to wait until 12 weeks to take ours home. When we took our dog home she gave us a whole binder with all kinds of medical testing records from both parents… eyes, hips, heart, and even a brain MRI for one parent. The breed has a neurological condition that is thought to be genetic, and an MRI of at least one parent is recommended practice. Most breeders don’t do it because it’s expensive. She even included daily logs of weights and feeding from the first couple weeks after our dog’s litter was born. Vet records from its first visit or two before 12 weeks. Probably more I am forgetting. The best breeders are frankly a little kooky. They are fanatical about the breed. It is a TON of work and expensive to breed dogs the right way.
