My suggestion: talk to them, listen to them, and find areas where you do agree. Find common ground where it exists and gain mutual understanding where it doesn't.

I am 55 and I spent most of my life as a democrat. 
Something went sideways a few years BEFORE trump.  
Democrats thought they had a permanent majority and a fringe corner of the Democratic party took it upon themselves to kick the heretics out of the democratic party.
People like AOC tried to replace moderate democrats with more extreme democrats so many resources were going into turning already blue districts even bluer.
It was like they felt that they has a permanent hold on power and it was time to purge the unfaithful.
