To everyone who is saying they'll move away from DC but not necessarily to be near their kids, I have a question. I have a list of about 10 places that I would just love to live. But while I've lived all over the world and have moved several times with our family, we've been settled here for a while now --- and I'd be too chickensh** to uproot myself at the age of 60 (when I plan to retire). I just don't I have it in me to start from scratch to make new friends. And I really really don't want to be lonely. I've seen what it's done to my mom who moved when she was 70. Isn't this a concern for all of you? Or when you say you'll move to Spain, Portugal, etc, are these just fantasties?
Moving away from DC? Sure, happens all the time. If you move to a retirement community, then you'll have friends who are all in the same situation as you. Moving to a different country? Not as likely. Possibly if there's a large expat community from the US. Even then, you have to deal with cultural issues, paying for healthcare, etc. Moving to some small village where you're the only foreigner is unlikely to work out. If you see villagers taking care of the elderly, they're doing so because that elderly person was born and raised there and related to everyone in the village. They're not going to start taking care of some 70 year old expat who moves there without any ties.
