People have seriously lost their minds. I am truly hoping the posts about "giving everyone under 18 a car" and the BS about brains not being wholly formed until 26 and that these thugs are "kids" are sarcastic. How about this? In addition to trying them as adults and throwing them in jail for a long time, how about we round up their absentee parents and throw them in jail too?
For the people standing in the back, such as yourself, multi-generational trauma caused by the United States gov't, atrocities, war crimes committed by the govt against the African American community has contributed to this factor. The government has failed to apologize for its atrocities, nor has it paid reparations to African Americans. This issue is systemic and is what happens when the govt stole a people from their land, enslaved them for 400 years, had Jim Crow, periods of lynching, mass incarceration, no civil rights and voting before 1965, science experiments on poor African Americans, under-resourced schools, etc. Shall I continue? The stealing of cars is the least of DC's problems.
What do you propose we do about all the shot and killed black people and kids, typically killed by other black people? A teen shot another teen in the Petworth metro just before 3 today.
Acknowledge the DNA based trauma and also acknowledge the poverty harms. Poverty brings a set of trauma of its own, provide more social workers, resources in the schools, therapy for the families, etc. healthy families equal a healthy society. Healthcare should be free in this country for everyone so that people can access the resources that they need.
The entire world has DNA based trauma. The US has incredible wealth but doesn’t want to redistribute it to force this population to get an education. That’s the problem. You do need a lot more resources to get to that point, but we have the money. Finland and Korea both transitioned from abject poverty to wealth by educating their population.
How do you get the parents and youth of DC to value education? There ARE resources here--far more than many other places. With immigrants, they frequently know the value precisely because they *didn't* have access to it in their home country. When you don't have something, you appreciate that thing even more. DC youth have a TON available to them. They just don't care or appreciate it. I'm just so tired of the excuses. It's not poverty, it's not trauma, and it's not lack of access to education. It's a massive parenting failure. Not everywhere, but in DC. How do you fix that? Throwing money at the problem certainly doesn't help.
You have to force them to access education. Fines and jail time if you don’t.
