I'm a woman that is pretty progressive and liberal and works in gender equity. I've been on a few dates with a conservative/republican. He's super respectful, but do any of you see any long term issues or have any experience? We are both agnostic.
It sounds like he’s willing to respect your views if you respect his, and you both could adopt an “agree to disagree” posture to keep the peace. What’s more important to you: (1) finding someone that respects your views, or (2) finding someone that agrees with your views?
Generally, if they agree with their views, and not just lip service, then they also would respect OP's views, too. I'm moderate, but I couldn't deal with a progressive liberal or a MAGA type.
Sure. But for existing “topics of potential political disagreement”, people can and do change their perspective over time. And, of course, new issues continually come up. If a relationship is premised on mutual respect first, I imagine that has a more likely chance of long term success, than a “we must agree politically” relationship.
I think if you base your relationship on shared morality and not politics, then when 1 party goes off the deep end they won’t jump off the end with them.
^PP here.. yes, exactly. And yes I have changed my views over time. I used to be a R, and now I'm an Ind. DH is a Dem. We have disagreed over some issues, but over time (20+ years), we've both met in the middle. DH doesn't agree with a lot of the progressive liberal stuff. Clearly, I don't agree with Rs anymore (I left that party a while ago). We still disagree on some things, but we can respect each other's views, and just agree to disagree. But we agree on the really important stuff and have shared values. But, OP is a progressive. I can't imagine any conservative respecting in the long term progressive ideology.
