There is not much you can do at the workplace if women are going to end up having a lot of kids and not being able to control family size.

Career and motherhood (by today's standards) don't go hand in hand.  In the old ages when families were large and lower class women still had to work in teh fields or as servants, artisans, etc, child labor was prevalent.  Child labor allowed women to keep having kids as their older kids would be pretty much supporting themselves and/or taking care of younger siblings, and many lower class kids were entirely uneducated/illiterate, which obviously takes the pressure off.

As far as parenting babies with defects, in the old days many of such babies were simply neglected, not many families could spare resources to care for them.  These babies had very short lives back then and in some cases were probably killed at birth.   Sad reality of older era worshiped by pro-lifers that they often ignore. [/quote]
