Sure enough, he has once again changed his positions on guns. [twitter]https://twitter.com/FoxNews/status/1530104051240673281[/twitter] The Internet Archives' Wayback Machine shows that as recently as April 1, the "Gun safety" page included a section that said: "And while it might not be the easy or politically safe thing to say, I strongly believe that we need to reduce the number of AR-15’s and AK-47’s on our streets." Sometime since April 1 (the most recent date archived), the campaign edited the section to say: "And while it might not be the easy or politically safe thing to say, I don't believe any civilian should own an AR-15 or AK-47." O'Rourke had previously dialed back his aggressiveness on gun control after falling behind incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the polls.
Maybe the Buffalo shooting. Or any of the other million shootings with AR-15s made him change his mind. He’d have my vote for sure.
Or, maybe he doesn't really stand for anything. He simply changes his position based on which way the wind is blowing.
That's not always a bad thing, like in this case.
Yes. The majority of Americans - even Republicans - want to ban assault weapons. https://www.politico.com/story/2019/08/07/poll-most-voters-support-assault-weapons-ban-1452586
First of all, define "assault weapon." Even the nominee as ATF head has refused to do that. Why? Secondly, that article is 3 years old. Long before the summer of 2020 where we saw violence across the nation and gun ownership shot up substantially. There are over 20 million AR-15 type weapons legally in circulation. Do you believe these should be confiscated? https://abcnews.go.com/US/inside-rise-ar-15-style-rifles-america/story?id=78842406
Where you been, son? Usually you gun and grammar nuts are first in, so you’re late to the party but better late than never. Do I believe all 20 million AR-15 GUNS (“ItS a SiDe ArM oR a WeApOn”) should be confiscated? In a world where Republicans aren’t blood thirsty monsters? Yes, obviously. What the fork do you need that for? I’ll say it again till the smooth brains understand: sane people, Democrats, are living under the tyranny of Republicans. You fascists are freaky minority but we have had to live under your sick rules for about 40 years. Guns wouldn’t have helped. Guns aren’t liberty.
I also find this such a beautiful representation of mental gymnastics, because I’ve seen all sorts of cosplaying Rambos on this site saying they need guns and AR-15s and so on to protect themselves from the government— and that ordinary people need weapons to “limit the state.” But they also support absurdly high police budgets, as well as all sort of unchecked police power. Are police not the state? WTF?
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the right wing obsession with guns is itself a symptom of/form of mental illness. We have absurd numbers of murdered people every year and it’s the gross availability of guns that does that. We have absurd numbers of suicides by gun every year and it’s because guns are everywhere and easy to get that so many people kill themselves (we must address mental health problems, but putting guns in easy reach is not addressing mental health problems!). You are correct that it’s mental gymnastics. I think on some level most right wingers realize that their politics are a lie, a set of incoherent and inconsistent beliefs that are just a jumble of authoritarian parents messing with the kids’ wiring when they’re little, poor education and constant propaganda, but I think there’s an awareness in them that it’s a sham. Hence the anger. Hence the love of guns. What makes scared, angry people feel temporarily powerful? Showing “power.” What shows more power than something that can tear bodies in half? Vote out the terrorist GOP. Vote Democratic. [twitter]https://twitter.com/LakotaMan1/status/1530020461400051712?cxt=HHwWgMCizZrg3LsqAAAA[/twitter] And for the love of god, we need to address the fact that right wingers hate women and refuse to take domestic violence seriously.
