Why can’t both be true? UMC kids who went to private schools want different college experiences. If you prefer a more homogeneous suburban vibe, want to be able to buy your way into a more luxe living situation, hope to meet a mate, and/or are tired of academic bootcamp experiences, you’d be a fool to choose Chicago or Columbia over Wash U. If you love big cities and thrive/want to prove yourself by upping the level of academic challenge you face, you’d be better off with Columbia or Chicago.  Clearly, both kinds of kids/families exist.  And kids from both places who came in already UMC will mostly end up UMC post-college.[/quote]

The amount of FA at WashU would have to be significantly higher for this to work. A donut hole family at ivies with a significant merit award/scholarship at WashU might find WashU attractive. [/quote]

Not talking about donut hole families — UMC kids whose families chose/were able to send them to private K-12 schools.  This being DCUM, that could be the demographic both posters are referencing.  Also not talking about WashU Vs “Ivies” but vs Chicago and Columbia specifically — which was the comparison both PPs were making.[/quote]

Columbia is FA only. No merit. Not sure about Chicago. For kids with 0 FA at Columbia - but a full-ride merit aid at WashU - i’d say no school, not even Columbia, is worth taking out a $100,000 loan over 4 years.  Unless the family is flush with cash, i’d say WashU.  For students in need of FA, Columbia will make it happen. WashU is “stingy” as one WashU booster admitted earlier.  Columbia will be extremely difficult to turn down for WashU.  WashU is a good school.  But Columbia is Columbia. [/quote]

You WashU boosters are truly delusional. Columbia has just as much $$$ and has one of the highest salaries for professors in the country. Columbia and Chicago have world-ranking departments.
