Chris Watts wrote a letter saying he had smothered the kids once, but they woke up, so he had to kill them "a second time" https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7520985/Chris-Watts-chilling-letter-confessing-killed-family.html I am not sure I believe anything he says. Don't you think Shannan would have gone in to look at her kids when she got home from her trip?
I'm assuming just about everything he says is a lie including the "last confession." In his last confession, he doesn't want it to seem like it was pre-mediated. Based on the details, I think he killed the kids first then waited for her at 2am. Kids wouldn't survive a strangulation attempt. Its arguably too easy. Maybe he lured Shanann in with the offer of sex and killed her. Pretty sure the autopsy would have said if there was sexual contact or sperm. I think he then sat there and did nothing for a while. Maybe he even slept. Then he loaded them up and took them to the work site just before he was supposed to start working to not arouse suspicion.
In a podcast they said one of the girls said it smelled on the car on the way to the oil field. She was referring to the dead mom in the back. Then the last girl to die cries after the first was murdered and she asks if the same will happen to her and she cries and says no daddy.
A dead body isn’t going to smell less than hour after death - not unless her bowels voided themselves. I heard she had a immediate miscarriage at the gravesite but I don’t know what if any scents are involved with that.
