Just because that is your priority doesn't mean you are less well off. And no, for many, they will need less in retirement. My neighbors are in their 80s and paid off their house before they retired, so no mortgage. They raised four kids who are out of the house, so no dependents. They are done with college savings since all kids are grown and educated. They are paying supplemental insurance and groceries, and other basic bills. For many, it's not a choice. Many folks don't even have retirement plans like 401(k)s so whatever they are saving for retirement is them, there is no company match. And for many living paycheck to paycheck they have no choice. Then there are the folks in the most recent recession who had to retire 10 years before they thought they would because they laid off at 55 and can't find a job. Many of these people are "aware" of how much retirement costs, to the PP above. How condescending of you.[/quote]
