Answer depends on who you ask. Notre Dame is super Catholic, no Greek Life. Awful downtrodden location. Northwestern is super Jewish, Jewish students control Greek Life and selective student orgs. Evanston is a decent location. Chicago has always been super Jewy & now Indian/Asian. Awful violent location. Most smart rich Midwest families seriously even don’t bother with private. The top 10% kids at flagship Big Ten universities turned down or didn’t bother with private colleges. Madison (UWisc) and Ann Arbor (UMich) are best college towns in the Midwest.
No Greek Life is a big bonus for ND. No exaggeration, if Notre Dame was in a better location it would be on par with Stanford and Duke. South Bend is a dump full of low-income trash, with no chance of a revival. There's just nothing there. Chicago is 90 minutes away.
I think the town is a dump too. However, two of my neighbors attend ND and they say the fact that everyone stays on campus because there is nothing to do in town is a bonus. They said it makes the ND community closer.
