And do you know that more than 1/2 the MWES base kids are Vienna kids - not Fairfax kids. Cheapest TH in 22181 is 500. And yes, I know that Fairfax is more affordable than Vienna. But MW is a Fairfax school that pulls majority from Vienna. Perhaps it’s time to move the Vienna kids to Vienna and Or Oakton schools that are actually closer than MW. Or would that also negatively affect you?
Would be happy to go to a Vienna or Oakton school. But you're getting off point. The point is that this rezoning decision wasn't based on rich families complaining about being in LJ (although I'm not going to deny that some/many(?) probably didn't want to be there). This decision was made by the facilities people b/c the rezoned schools make up the Oakton block within the current LJMS, the block was the right size that they were looking to move, two of the three schools were already split to Thoreau (OES and MRES), and geographically they were the western fringe of the Jackson zone. None of those things have to do with class/wealth. And in fact, MWES is not a "wealthy school." I'm not sure that you (PP who live in MW zone) and I are on opposite sides of this equation unless you think that the "wealthy" parents of MWES (??) pushed their weight around to get rezoned. My experience with MWES parents is that many wanted to stay with what they knew, many AAP parents are sticking with LJ b/c they think it is better and they have a history with it, and many of the non-AAP parents never thought about TMS before this came up b/c they were happy with LJ. There was virtually no discussion or interest in the topic at PTA meetings or other events. People seemed unaware of it. Contrast that with the parents at OES -- at the June meeting, they were ALL OVER IT and wanted it done ASAP. It was very much on their minds b/c year after year, half of the 6th graders would go to TMS and half would go to LJ. I don't think this rezoning decision was based on wealthy families getting their way. But, the wealthier families, for the most part, are fine leaving LJ for TMS. That doesn't mean they had undue influence on the decision.
