Because of the prevalance of American media.  They found that in this small pacific island, before western media invaded that island, the people were "fat" and happy.  They got exposed to western media, and low and behold, people started getting eating disorders.

BTW, in Asia, light skin has *always* been a sign of beauty because it was associated with wealth, ie, if you were rich you didn't have to work the farms; same in Europe until about the 20th century when tanning meant that you could afford beach vacations.  And the eye surgery in Asia?  Half the east Asian population has the double eyelid naturally. Has nothing to do with looking more white.
