Good thing DH and I got our combined $500k in loans forgiven through PSLF. Guess we can now join the F you, got mine brigade. But seriously, we didn't budget for loan repayment and I bet most of the people with only $20-30k in debt didn't either. There will absolutely be political and economic problems once people get their $300/month bill while servicing rent and other high-interest debt. But at least a few hundred UMC here will be satisfied.
But jobs that qualify someone for PSLF (including doctor & lawyer jobs) pay absolute dogcrap, so it evens out.
Uh, no. Doctors who work for nonprofit hospitals absolutely do get market wages. Wages, of course, depend on your speciality. If you do residency and speciality training at a nonprofit hospital, you’ve already knocked off 5-7 years of payments under PSLF. Might as well finish out the 3-4 years and get the very large balance forgiven while making the bare minimum payment.
Many have payroll outsourced to for-profit “physician groups.”
