Maybe Brandon is feeling the financial pinch from maintaining a real job, child support, and not having Jen's publicity money into a joint pot. I wonder who scheduled first - Brandon schedules vacation, Jen plans the party while he's out of town. Or Jen planned the party, didn't invite Brandon, so he planned to be away.
