It still bugs me that with all her millions now, Carrie is still in a walk up alcove studio apartment on the UES.
I hear you. Does she actually have millions though? Why can't she just get a classic-6 on the UES or something? I posted upthread about money and her closet. I really liked this episode-- thought it was well written. Loved the Grey Gardens reference with Carrie's smoking outfits. The racks of clothing in her apartment highlighted this for me... I mean, is she really going to "archive" all of her clothes and shoes?
Carried lived in that apartment for years before marrying Big and loved it - there’s a reason she couldn’t bring herself to give it up after they got married. It does not seem strange at all that after having her world turned upside down so unexpectedly, she would choose to return to a place that comforted her.
+1 I find this totally believable and am irate about the “I’m going to buy a fancy downtown apartment and then sell it after a week when it beeps too much”plot line.
It was an incredibly wasteful thing to do, but people don’t always make the best choices when they’re mired in grief. Carrie made that comment in one of the earlier episodes about not being that person who lived in the same apartment after 40 years or something like that, so I think as much as she might have wanted to be there, she felt like it would be a failure somehow to do it. She bought the new apartment instead and hated it, so then she had a good excuse to moved back to her old apartment after she sold both her new apartment and her apartment with Big. Now that she’s there, she’s comfortable and doesn’t feel the need to move. It just took her a while to recognize what makes her happy. It’s kind of a theme running quietly through the series, Carrie figuring out who she is and what she wants her life to look like after Big.
