I'm Wondering why all the Maret hate?
Because they are behaving horribly to everyone who is not part of their cool little club. It’s fine to act in the interests of your employer, but when contracts are entered into with public entities that violate basic principles of procurement and then you accuse those who are upset about that of slandering your institution and having ulterior motives, you look fairly silly when you then try to claim that you are in fact everyone’s best friend.
The opponents of the field use agreement decided to frame their arguments in terms of race and class to portray Maret negatively. If there are folks to criticize it is not the Maret community but rather corrupt, self-dealing Jack Evans and DC’s corrupt but dumb-as-a-doornail mayor Bowser. They are responsible for this mess.
Definitely Evans/DC deserves focus here. But Maret has proactively argued from every angle they can come up with how they are very deserving of this deal and they and the deal are perfectly in the right. I would have far more respect for them if they said, “We have a deal, we need this field, but we see the problem so we’ll work with you to fix it. They only ceded unused time to Hardy starting a year ago (with renewal in sight). Mary Cheh quoted Marjo Talbott saying Maret wasn’t going to “negotiate against themselves” — a defiant stance they softened a little bit for the Council hearing. They made all sorts of tone-deaf, self-absorbed arguments like, “our kids need to practice nearby right after school so they can get home for dinner in homework.” Maret can’t claim innocence when they have energetically strode into the muck.
