Why isn't the Equity Department on the chopping block? https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/equity/ In 2024 the 8 current members of the Equity Dept cost MCPS $1,107,810 in salary alone. And that was two years ago! I’m sure it’s even more now. While I believe equity work is important work, these overpaid 8 are basically never seen or heard from in central office or in the schools they are purported to serve. They are working on "professional development" that the county could easily find online for free.
It looks like the department is in chapter 5-8 of the budget book. And they're slated to drop a Grade 16 Admin Secretary III and add a N Coordinator (C) So salaries in FY 2025 was $1,061,182 to $996,186 for FY 2026, where it looks like they lost a position and then proposed to $1,258,289 for next year. In FY 2025 total amount for the department was $1,1384,94 and proposed for $1,705,289 for next year. Depending on what they do, like you said I think having people ensure equity is important in the school system. ie they make sure that resources are allocated appropriately across the school system. And I don't think anyone really takes online training seriously and it wouldn't be as effective.
