Actually in CA they have. If you look at the strong privates in CA (which is where affluent white kids go) you will see far lower numbers attending top UCs. They are opting for OOS privates because of the crazy admissions process, crowded campuses and poor housing situation. Middle class white kids are still attending the UCs.[/quote]

Bay Area private school parent here.  I think it is a bit more nuanced, you are correct that families that can afford it have their kids in private school at least for high school if not K-12 rather than even the truly excellent public high schools.  Those kids apply to the UC's, single application and huge range of acceptance rates makes it an easy way to cover off reach/target/safety.  In the end these private school kids (except those on scholarship who also need aid for college)  go to the best school they get admitted to because they can afford to.  So if they get into Cal or UCLA and their best private option is Tufts, they go to the UC.  If they get into Cal and Yale, they go Yale.   [/quote]
