I dunno. I mean as a 5'1" person I can technically lift my fully packed hard case carry-on into the overhead but it is sometimes a struggle. Thankfully there is always a guy around who likes to feel useful.
This. I'm a small petite woman. I can lift my own bag. I've never had trouble with a man not offering to help me. I find it nice. I can imagine if you're older it would be difficult. I'm sure a flight attendant would help you if asked nicely.
My parents are older and no longer bring large bags on board. They have adjusted their travel realities to their current situation.
DP. I'm not old. I'm just petite. I have been my entire adult life. I'm also a c-suite executive who travels frequently. With how long it takes to get bags these days and how often airlines lose luggage, I could not do my job as expected if I had to check it. Many newer airplane configurations are such that I can't even reach the latch of the overhead bin. It has nothing to do with whether my bag is too big or heavy. Luckily, most people are reasonable. I've never had an issue with someone, even an FA, offering to open the latch if I can't reach it. And 95% of the time someone will help me lift my bag (since even if you can lift it, it's harder to lift something over your head while standing on tippy toes) or offer put it up themselves. If you think people like me should find different careers because of the way airplanes are configured these days, I guess that's your opinion. But I think it's a pretty stupid one.
