Every parent that I've spoken to in my neighborhood, both with elementary, middle, and hs aged students at Oakton, would love for their kid to attend the new school instead of Oakton, myself included. We are in a Crossfield neighborhood.
That bus ride has to be much worse now than it was years ago. Question: I've heard that McDaniel lives in Franklin Farm. Is he a Crossfield/Oakton parent?
Not sure. We live less than 10 minutes from the Carson/KAA campus, and it's nuts that they would put a HS there and not include the neighborhoods where kids currently have a 40 minute bus ride to Oakton
Crossfield, Floris, and Fox Mill are within a 10 minute commute of KAA. I understand Crossfield has the longest commute and relieving that is important but they are not the only ones close to KAA. Oak Hill is pretty much next door. I don't know the distances for Coates and McNair. I think people have discussed Coates, McNair and Floris because they are at Carson as base schools. Fox Mill is the other base school. With the School Board talking about dealing with split feeders, sending the Carson base schools to the HS next door makes sense. The problem is the HS those schools feed into is full but not overcrowded. Oak Hill is mentioned because of its proximity but it goes to Oakton, again, not full but a long bus ride. Crossfield is close by and has a long bus ride to Oakton HS. If we are including Oak Hill and Crossfield at KAA, then there probably needs to be a shift of MS. Oakhill and Crossfield should be shifted to Carson. Fox Mill would probably be shifted to Hughes, which would not be popular with parents. Oak Hill would need to be backfilled at Franklin. Crossfield is backfilled by Fox Mill at Hughes. The reality is, South Lakes would see a real increase in FARMs and a drop in test scores if it loses Floris or Fox Mill. Floris is less damaging because it is only a portion for Floris that attends South Lakes. Oakton is fine if it loses Oak Hill and Crossfield. Chantilly and Centerville need the most relief and get none from the new HS. Centerville and Chantilly parents don't want to be moved to Westfield, which will need back fill if Coates and McNair are moved. Someone is hoping that the aviation academy reduces the boundary moving and explanation that they have to do because they know that families moved to a school that is not KAA are going to be unhappy with where they move and families who could have been moved but are not are going to be angry.
People have discussed Floris, McNair, and Coates because KAA is in the Floris district, all three schools feed primarily or entirely to Westfield, and Coates and McNair are north of Floris. So kids at Floris have first dibs on KAA and they would then need to do something with Coates and McNair to avoid creating a true Westfield attendance island (as opposed to the fake one some claim already exists). If they don’t move Coates to KAA they are creating a rich-kid school in a fancy building (bad optics), and McNair likely moves with Coates. After that, Oak Hill is the most likely school to move because that relieves overcrowding at Chantilly, and after that it’s anyone’s guess as to whether there’s space for more kids and, if so, whether they’d come from Fox Mill or Crossfield.
