What NYT article? The Columbia thing?
Yeah. Mostly surprising because Torres was really, really opposed to Mamdani before he won - between him coming around and Jeffries sticking up for him against the earlier Trump attacks and Gillibrand apologizing for her "jihad" comment, it just doesn't seem like there's going to be any organized resistance to Mamdani from institutional Democrats, and without that I don't see any realistic path to him losing.
Torres isn't really supporting him. He is being intelligent. No one is all good or all bad. He is basically saying that on this issue, the criticism is uncalled for. That doesn't mean he supports him overall. I wish more people on both sides were like this - say you support a candidate on certain issues and disagree with them on others. I really disliked DeBlasio. But I thought he did a great job with pre-k. I loved Bloomberg. I think people obsessively blaming him for stop and frisk is total overkill because the concept was actually really good, it was just poorly executed and he refused to pivot even when he knew it wasn't going well. A Mamdani supporter above had a nice post about his pros and cons. I think Cuomo has done a lot of bad things but I like many of his policy ideas (though not all of them), his ability to get things done, and his ability to potentially stand up to Trump. I do not think NYC can afford to have a mayor who will be learning on the job, which is the case with Mamdani. It is an incredibly complex organization. Just throwing wish list ideas out there and seeing which stick is not going to work. And his "us against them" attitude towards the rich is not healthy - he can advocate for the rich paying more without portraying them as bad guys. See - not that hard.
