i was in pediatric residency and one early morning (7am) we got told about a child coming up from the ER. She has been abused and was being admitted only until they found a placement - a "social" admission. The mother's boyfriend had been beating mother with a baseball bat that whole night and there were 2 kids in the home - ages 3 and 6 - 6 year old got caught in the crossfire again and again. When child was brought up, she was missing large patches of hair - the man had pulled so much of it out. But what i noticed the most was how scared of all human contact she was. She crawled beneath a crib that was in her shared room and wouldn't come out. She was just terrified.
Similar scene for me. I saw a child at a DC hospital who had no legs. His mother burned them on the stove when she was high on PCP. He was a handsome pleasant boy who had the wrong mother.
