There's not been a full and transparent public discussion about whether the people of the US actually owe all this money to the third world, who hates us and views us as cultural colonizers. In one lens this is humanitarian. But in another, less American lens, this is soft imperialism. There's no plan for these nations to get better or stronger. We are just paying for stasis. But this isn't why AID is being shut down. It's being shut down because it is believed to have funneled money to revolutionary efforts in the US, including funding the prosecutions through the org Fair and Just Prosecutions, via the Tide Center.
