At least, that is what the correlation is in my community of white families, half who are first or 2nd gen college, the other half had great grandparents who went to college. the latter are much more likely to support any major, though they still push for the "big name" colleges in the northeast, with Smith and Vassar as the ideal backups if ivies do not work out.
