Once again, if you can just buy your way into TJ, why aren't there more white kids there?
Because they aren’t as driven by national rankings? Not as interested in STEM or a grind HS experience? It was well known in my affluent area that you could greatly improve chances of admissions by paying $$$ for prep classes. It’s a choice that affluent families had.
20 years ago, TJ was majority white. Did they suddenly develop a disdain STEM and competitive high schools over the last 4 years? Or did they get crowded out?
The big change that started about 15 years ago was when TJ first got named the #1 high school in America by USNWR. Almost overnight you started to see an influx of applications from South Asian families, whose numbers at the school used to be in the teens in the 90s and early 2000s. Indeed, the population of students of Middle Eastern descent was larger than the South Asian cohort in those days. It is a notable tendency that South Asian families, especially those whose parents were not raised in America, are motivated by rankings and academic prestige more than any other demographic group. This is not a judgmental statement in any way - it's just the way it is. It would be helpful for folks from that community to explain this cultural tendency, to educate the rest of us.
