From Page Six: "Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow are preparing to release a joint statement after their former co-star was found dead in his Los Angeles home Saturday at age 54, we’re told. “The cast is reeling from the loss of their brother, because that’s what Matty was — their brother,” an industry source told us Sunday. “It’s just devastating.”
Yeah, I assumed they'd be working together on a statement. Have always appreciated the way they stuck together.
Why? This is personal not business. They should be free to say what they want. I hope they each provide a tidbit about him that we didn’t know, like how many people he has helped, etc.
NP. You want a “tidbit” about a man who lived in the public eye since the age of 24 or so, who recently published a heartbreakingly complete, honest, and vulnerable memoir? You want a little “tidbit,” eh, you ghoul? However THEY decide to handle it will be the right thing to do. Keep sniffing around for tidbits.
NP but what a bizarre and rage-filled take. I interpreted “tidbit” to mean a fond personal memory they had of him that is not widely known, not a piece of gossip.
What more can they say? What more can they give you? They’ve done interviews, reunion specials, behind-the-scenes footage, DVD commentary, on and on. And for someone to say oh well if they do it as a group that’s disappointing and they’d better do it like this…I mean, shut up. This is their friend, their longtime friend and colleague. However they choose to deal with it is right, and any criticism of how they choose to approach this is wrong.
Being this is a personal loss to each and everyone of them, each with their own emotions, etc. I find it strange that each of them wouldn’t publish their own condolences. The fact that they are making it as a group also makes it seem like they are more concerned about protecting the “image” of Friends than personal emotions. Sad.
Weird take. Just because they aren't each publishing a separate public statement doesn't mean they don't each have their own emotions. Why are you interested in what any of them has to say about Perry? Because they starred with him on that show. That's it. You aren't sitting around clamoring to find out what his parents, siblings, assistant, and non-famous friends are feeling right now, right? His family released a collective statement, not individual statements. The creators of Friends released a joint statement. SNL put up a memorial photo at the end of last night's episode without any comment from anyone on the show. And so on. You are not entitled to the individual grief of anyone who knew him in this moment, and the idea that it's somehow disappointing that the cast of Friends would choose to release a joint statement says way more about you than it does about them. They know people want to hear from them, but that doesn't mean they are required to let everyone into the full experience of their grief on an individual level.
I find it strange that they are putting out a group statement. They haven’t been an “group” for almost 20 years and in all that time they all been together twice, not counting the reunion. And it seems the group statement should be pretty simple, something like…”he was our brother, we love him, we will miss him”.
DP. I think you vastly underestimate the power, in the public mind, of a hit TV show, even decades after its end. With reruns, and now streaming, keeping a show alive forever, the cast of that show becomes inextricably melded into a group for the average viewer. Sure, in reality they weren't a "group" as you note, but in many people's minds they are and always will be closely linked, even if that isn't their current real life. It also was entirely appropriate for them, individually and as a group, to WAIT for Perry's family to issue a statement. Whatever statement the Friends cast issues will swamp all other statements and condolences and get a burst of big coverage, so it was right to step back and wait for his family to comment. There is no rush, just none whatsoever, for any of the cast to comment.
Exactly. Individual statements would also be criticized as bids for attention People can't win
"bids for attendion" sums up Gwyneth Paltrow- she is a such an attention whore. She even said they "drifted" apart (ie-she hasn't talked to him decades)- same for Ione Skye for sharing the image of their texts from two weeks ago. its so tacky.
