The mysterious and annoying thing about those character letters is that they acknowledge the conviction and go out of their way to say they aren't challenging it. So they accept they raped these women. But THEN they argue that he should spend less time in prison because he's such a good friend to them.

The only remotely compelling argument in any of those letters is the fact that he has a 9 yr old daughter with whom he appears to be close, and you can make an argument that a judge should consider her well being and the harm of losing her father to prison. Incarceration that breaks up families is a genuine issue in this country and I'm not going to ignore that just because this family is rich and white. BUT this is really only mentioned a couple times and somewhat in passing. The emphasis is on "he's just such a wonderful person, I simply can't imagine him doing what he was convicted of doing. I guess he did because you say he did, but please go easy on him anyway."

I didn’t see hers as any worse than the others. All the stupid anti drug nonsense is just that- stupid and irrelevant to the crimes he committed. So what that he is anti-drug. All Scientologists are, even the medically beneficial drugs, so it’s no great shock that he’s anti drugs. For himself. [/quote]
