All of these kids have so much emotional/mental trauma. Mady seems to be just an extension of Kate, and has zero problems writing off family members. If what she is saying is true, I can understand being upset and not agreeing, but how about we educate and explain how that behavior makes you feel? Since she hasn’t seen him since he was 12 I’m more inclined to think he said something that she deemed hateful and/or violent and used that as an excuse to alienate him from her life. Toxic family members are a real thing and I absolutely understand cutting them off (I’ve had to do it) but teenagers are immature and don’t understand consequences of their words. Hopefully when they all grow up (and Kate is in a nursing home) they’ll all see how ridiculous this is and reconnect.
She explicitly stated that he has physically threatened her or someone in her family as recently as this last year. This isn't from when he was 12. I don't know why people are having such a hard time accepting that in a family with two dysfunctional parents and kids raised on television in an exploitative environment from essentially birth, there can be more than one person behaving badly. Kate had Collin committed, and 1) didn't tell his dad, and 2) rarely or barely visited him. Those two data points are horrific. It doesn't mean that she had *no reason* to commit him other than she's picking on him. Now you have another kid in the family getting death threats for 'not taking Collin's side,' and when she details his terrible behavior you jump to "she's nothing but an extension of Kate" instead of hearing what is being said. I get why people don't like Kate Gosselin - she's not a sympathetic figure. But you are writing off every piece of evidence that doesn't align with your preconceived notion of "Kate Monster, Jon good, Collin victim, all other kids puppets" and it's really dumb.
He was only *11* when she had him committed full-time to a residential facility for apparently years. That shouldn’t happen unless the child is very, very sick in a permanent way, which is clearly not the case for Collin. Further, she hid him from Jon. I unfortunately am adjacent to the special needs behavioral world, and even the sickest kid in that age range I know has only spent brief periods institutionalized. What is almost certainly the case is that Collin was a more difficult kid that Kate made worse with poor, harsh parenting. This is the *classic* spiral for kids with oppositional behaviors. Then because Kate had too many kids she couldn’t cope in any way except institutionalizing him. She didn’t even have the minimum maternal instinct or self-awareness to get him placed with a relative … such as his own father.
Clearly not the case? Almost certainly? Why should anyone take you seriously? You don't even know these people.
I don’t know them, but I know disruptive behaviors and large families. Institutionalizing a kid for 3 years with no dx other than ADHD is very, very unusual. The fact that Jon got full custody and got him released speaks volumes.
So probably more than ADHD going on. Why do you think we have the full picture of what's going on with him? It speaks volumes that he was institutionalized for that long. You don't know everything.
If there was something more going on, he would have that diagnosis. Kids don’t get stuck in those places for *years* unless they are severely sick. Collin has been living successfully in the community for years, graduated from a mainstream HS, is enlisting in the military. Kate got him institutionalized to get rid of him - because she could pay for it. She didn’t even fight for custody in the end.
DP but you seem very certain that you know his full diagnosis based on nothing but an interview with Jon, not even his doctor. He could very well have been diagnosed with more than ADHD while committed, and there would be no way to fact check that (nor should there be). Or they could have doctor shopped after he was released to get his diagnosis changed, which happens plenty. I'm not sure why you think "Kate had too many kids and couldn't cope with him" and "She didn't even fight for custody" are somehow reasonable simultaneous attacks - if the first is true then surely the second is the correct course of action? Kate sucked as a mom, because two of her kids don't talk to her. But by that token, Jon must suck as a dad since *6* of his kids don't speak to him. Or will it be, again: whatever confirms your "Kate Bad, Jon Good" preconception must be true, and anything that challenges it means that the other kids are lying, or puppets, or some other baseless attack?
John didn't want to do the show anymore and Kate got rid of him as that was her income/lifestyle. We don't know if he sucked as a Dad as he was never allowed to be a Dad and the show paid her legal fees and he couldn't compete with that kind of money/legal team. It says something that two of the kids choose to live with him and are doing well.
