Maybe, but DC has a ton of idealist families who are living that cliche of  “be the change you want to see in the world”. I mean who else would pay $950,000 to live in a narrow row house with an open air drug market a block away, teens that rob you for puppies and cars with babies still in them? It’s pure idealism. I get it. I live on Capitol Hill too. I like the walkability and how the urban planning doesn’t crush your soul like the sprawl of Springfield VA or whatever.

At the same time, I am a cynic. I don’t think all these bleeding hearts who cry “racism!!!” At anyone who dares to ask for strict criminal punishment for violent crime is, in fact, racist. I honestly think the city council is too cowed by aggressive progressive voices. Progressive criminal justice is clearly not working, but we’ve just started implementing these reforms in the last few years so I guess it’s the whole “you can’t make an omelette without cracking some eggs” according to progressives like CA. It sucks. We will keep seeing crime rise while we try out these novel initiatives that are basically lip stick on a pig. Like violence interruptors? No they do nothing. Spend that $9M on police.
